The Cape Ann Lantern is an adaptation of the English “lanthorn” meaning “lantern of the horn.” One of the earliest lanterns imported from England, this candle-burning lantern used a window covering of painstakingly prepared animal horn. A later lanthorn had windows of mica, which was easier to obtain and prepare in small sheets and did not yellow as fast as the horn.
