The Cape Ann lantern is an adaptation of the English “lanthorn” meaning “lantern of horn”. One of the earliest lanterns imported from England, this candle-burning lantern used a window covering of painstakingly prepared animal horn. A later lantern had windows of mica, which was easier to obtain and prepare in small sheets and did not yellow as fast as the horn. UL listed for wet locations.
